With the doors of Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) being opened to International students this year, the Asia Cultural Fair, held at the Canteen 2 Foyer of the College from 1 December to 4 December, 2010, was indeed timely as it sets out to promote understanding and appreciation of the various Asian cultures amongst its existing students.
Organised by the Chinese Language Society, the fair consisted of six booths, each representing an Asian country, namely Malaysia, China, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Taiwan, which featured a large variety of trinkets, products, food, music and performances, incorporating elements of fun into understanding international culture.
The highlights included a fashion show featuring the traditional costumes of Asia, a Japanese Cosplay session, “Wushu” performance, a Korean dance performance and a singing performance by Malaysian singer, Chee Shih Hau. The various Asian food were a huge hit with visitors as the aroma lingered in the air drawing visitors to its large selection of Asian culinary delights.
“1 Malaysia speaks of the unity of different cultures, I feel that events like these have the ability to inspire students to understand and appreciate cultures they were not born into and still be reminded of their own heritage, I am very glad to be a part of a College that sees the importance of cultural understanding”, said Kerry Wong, a second year student pursuing a Diploma in Business Studies (International Business), who was visiting the fair.
As a premier institution of higher education with four decades of excellence in its track record, projects like these truly affirms TAR College’s commitment towards empowering youths, through an emphasis of having a critical and understanding mind coupled with experiential learning.
The event was planned, organised and executed by student members of the Chinese Language Society wishing to polish their skills in communication and events management. Other than being a platform of character building, students also raised funds through this event to empower future members towards organising more beneficial projects.
