A Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) Fashion Design student emerged as the second prize winner of the Ladies Leisure Shoe Design Award during the Malaysian Footwear Competition Design 2010 in Ipoh recently.
S. Deepa, 20, a second-year Diploma in Fashion Design student, received RM1,000, a trophy and a certificate from the Perak executive councillor Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon for her design that was inspired by the Rock and Roll culture.
“Rock and Roll itself is exciting, it’s rebellious, provocative and basically it’s all about feeling carefree and having good old-fashioned fun,” she said when expressing about her design and the inspiration behind it.
“I picked out the colours of the shoes after seeing pictures of the famous London double-decker bus. The colour black and red is a match made in heaven. I added silver zips (to the shoes) to make it stand out.”
Deepa also thanked her lecturers from the School of Social Science and Humanities for their advice and guidance.
Another TAR College student Gillian Ng Siew Lee, 23, from the Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design programme, also won a consolation prize in the competition.
The competition was jointly organised by the Perak Footwear Industry Association, Malaysian Footwear Manufacturers Association, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Shoe Industry Association, Penang Footwear Association and the Association of Shoes Manufacturers and Traders Johor Bahru.
