Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) organized its 9th Career Fair at the Sports Complex. It was launched by YB Dr Hou Kok Chung, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education on the 11th of November 2009. This year there were 42 participating companies.
It is heartening to note that the Career Fair truly served as an effective channel for students and graduates to connect with participating employers such as Gamuda, Public Bank, JobStreet, Genting Malaysia Berhad and Eu Yan Sang, just to name a few, through information sessions, interviews and recruiting activities, offering ample opportunities for employment and internships.
For this year’s event, a total of 2,488 students participated in the Fair. Among them was a group of 36 students from Perak Branch Campus who also took the opportunity to visit the Career Fair. Ng Siew Kian, the Student Affairs Officer and Chan Yi Teng, the Student Counsellor of Perak Branch Campus chaperoned the students to KL Main Campus.
One of the students from the Diploma in Business Studies (E-Commerce and Marketing) Year 2 by the name of Cheong Wuan Ling said: “The whole trip to KL Main Campus was really worthwhile as we got to know about the participating companies’ profile, background and their expectations in looking for a suitable candidate so that we are now better equipped when we decide to look for a job.”
The feedback from the participating companies was also very encouraging as the majority indicated that they were satisfied with the organization of the Fair.
“TAR College provides a good avenue for recruiting employees because it produces graduates who are of quality. In fact, our COO and a large percentage of our staff belong to the TAR College alumni, exclaimed Vanessa Tan, Vice President of Branding & Communications of HT Consulting (Asia) Sdn Bhd.
She added that this time around, it was even easier for the company to identify suitable candidates because of the colour coding that was used to show which School the students come from. Round stickers were placed on the students’ sleeves with the colour pink for School of Business Studies, green for School of Technology, orange for School of Arts & Science and yellow for School of Social Science and Humanities.
There was even a special booth placed in the Sports Complex where some of the student helpers were there to assist anyone who might need help in locating a booth or field any questions they might have in relation to the Fair.
In organizing the fair, the Career Guidance 2009 Chairperson, Ms Wong Xue Yi said: “By assisting in organizing this Career Fair, I have learnt a lot of soft-skills such as communication skill, leadership skill as well as the value of working in a team. But the most important part of this process has provided me the opportunity to network with potential employers and college mates”.
TAR College is committed to help its students move forward towards better career opportunities on an annual basis by organizing these Career Fairs. The continuing interests of companies in Tunku Abdul Rahman College’s Career Fairs are an indication that the College is on the right track in producing quality graduates that are meeting the demands of the employers.
