Boosting English Language Skills

The College is committed to upgrading students’ standard of English in the Campus in a lively and effective manner. The learning dynamics of the English Language took off during the annual TAR College – Promote English Campaign organised by Extra-Mural Studies Department (EMSD). The campaign started off with a bang during the Freshie Orientation Week, making the event more meaningful for the new students.

The campaign has the aim of enhancing the students English Language skills in listening, writing, speaking and reading. It is also held to encourage the students to speak well and write better English, preparing them to cope better in their studies and improving their presentation skills and self-confidence in using the language for self-expression and social interaction.

The year-long Campaign is very activity-oriented so as to engage students in sharpening their skills in language learning. The highlights of the campaign are the ever-popular Dart-A-Word that widens students’ vocabulary, “Language Camp” containing fun activities to be held in Pangkor Island and the “English Carnival” which is a celebration of sorts at year end. Other activities lined up for the year include, “Newspaper in Education”, “Scavenger Hunt”, “Creative Writing”, “Public Speaking Workshop”, “Mind Your English” and many more.

The learning focuses on games, songs and fun activities which stimulate and attract the students. This Campaign, at the halfway mark, is well into achieving its objective based on the positive feedback from students who attended the workshops.

Wong Ruby, Diploma in Business Studies (Marketing), Year 2 student said: “The Public Speaking Workshop was eye-opening and I learnt how to speak more confidently and also picked up skills required to become a better speaker.”
