| Public Relations Campaign to Save Planet Earth at TAR College |
| |
They brought in a colourful parrot and a crafty old owl; they had flame-eating performers; they even dabbled in polluted Klang River water – because they realise that there is but one Earth on which we all live, and youths should be the ones to lead in protecting it. |
| |
| TAR College final-year Advanced Diploma in Mass Communication students in Public Relations and Media Studies organised a campaign with the theme “One Earth One Heart” with the purpose of creating awareness and educating the public about loving and caring for Mother Nature. |
| |
“This environmental education event is part of our practical-based PR Campaign Planning & Management subject where students learn campaign strategy and execution, exhibition and entertainment, and promoting industry linkage by securing sponsorships,” said PR programme supervisor Mr. Chuan Tek Pheung. |
| |
“The students developed expertise in executing a successful PR campaign and also considered the economic perspective of securing resources. We are proud they had convinced a big corporation like Hong Leong Assurance to sponsor RM10,000 for a student project,” said Mr. Lee Hwee Chuin, the Acting Head of the School of Social Science and Humanities. |
| |
The campaign was officially launched by the College’s Acting Vice Principal Mr. Yeow Sing Hing and Mr. Tony Goh Guan Hin, the General Manager of Agency Development from Hong Leong Assurance, the main sponsor of the campaign. |

| The students set up seven booths to highlight issues such as global warming, environmental destruction, endangered wildlife and natural habitat, amongst others. |
| |
| Among the notable booths was one with the theme “STOP! Come Save These Species” that showcased an avian sanctuary presented by the KL Bird Park where the visitors were fascinated and entertained by a Malaysian Eagle Owl and a Yellow-naped Parrot. |

| Other main attractions included “Forests for Us” that displayed a huge “hand-made” world’s largest flower – Rafflesia. The “Ocean of Hope” booth had a mysterious “dark room” filled with glow-in-the-dark deep sea creatures and also featured a sharing session on marine biodiversity by a certified dive-master from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. |

| Representatives from HLA were pleased that as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility, the collaborative effort managed to convey a strong and positive message to the young generation. “We truly believe in contributing back to the society, and protecting the environment is like the protection of all human life. Corporations should work for the betterment of society,” said Ms. Loh Guat Lan, HLA’s Chief Operating Officer (Life Division). |
| |
| The event was part of the required hands-on experience at TAR College to prepare students to hit the ground running when they enter the public relations industry. Many alumni have carved successful careers for themselves overseas as well as in renowned firms such as Hill and Knowlton, one of the top five PR consultancies; and Priority Communications, the company that was involved in organising the recent Beijing Olympic Torch Relay in Kuala Lumpur. |
