Employability Takes the Highest Priority at TAR College

In March each year, Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) holds a Career Fair with the special purpose of meeting job-related needs of Accounting and Finance students in their graduating year. This was mooted by the School of Business Studies due to the pressing demand from employers for the graduating students particularly those with ACCA. Jointly organized by the School of Business Studies and Student Affairs Department, this event is an addition to the large scale annual Career Fair which is usually held at the end of the year.

Participating companies at this Career Fair comprise of top names in the business world such as Accenture, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, Deloitte, KPMG, BDO Binder, IBM, Dell, HP, United Overseas Bank, Texchem, Standard Chartered Bank, Bata etc. This special event provides an excellent platform for recruiters and managers from leading international accounting firms, financial institutions and multinational companies to source for prospective candidates for full-time employment in their esteemed organisations.

The SBS Mini Career Fair pulled in a large crowd of students.   Staff from PricewaterhouseCoopers who were there to meet graduating students.

The overwhelming response from the participating employers during the Career Fair demonstrates that TAR College graduates are in high demand by the industry. This has been accentuated by an impressive pool of TAR College alumni out in the market who have moved up the ranks to be prominent entrepreneurs, captains of industry, CEOs and business advisers.

“We are looking for candidates that not only possess excellent academic qualifications but also soft skills such as communication skills and the ability to work in a team. So far we have spoken to some candidates who have shown remarkable potential,” said Ms Nancy Wong, a Senior Resourcing Executive from KPMG, when interviewed during last year’s fair.

Ms Christine Chan, who is the Human Resources Manager at Ernst & Young, found the Fair especially conducive for recruiting because it was timely and accounting-focused. “This Career Fair is excellent because there is a big pool of targeted candidates and most of them would be ready to be employed very soon,” said Chan.

Ms. Kho Sok Kee, Head of School of Business Studies reiterated that the School also works very closely with industry to place students on internship training for an exposure into the real practical working world. Internship providers number about 100 and include the Big 4 international accounting firms, MNCs and public-listed companies. Career talks and interviews conducted by prospective employers at the campus are common. Employers and students alike are happy that such links have been fostered for the benefit of all parties.

At TAR College, we not only pave the way for students to obtain jobs but we first of all ensure that the education acquired is of top-notch quality as is shown in our ACCA programme. TAR College is the only institution outside the United Kingdom and Ireland that is accorded the privilege to conduct the ACCA Internally Assessed programme, granted only to institutions which have met ACCA’s stringent accreditation requirements including physical and manpower resources, high academic standards and superior management and administrative structure.

ACCA has awarded TAR College the prestigious Platinum award that puts it in the top 10% of ACCA tuition providers globally. This award further reinforces the success and strength of this internally assessed programme and speaks volumes of the wholesome education philosophy the programme advocates.

The ACCA curriculum is creatively woven into the TAR College Diploma and Advanced Diploma that promises a much broader spectrum that prepares students to face the challenges of the global workplace. Students have the distinctive advantage of completing the College Advanced Diploma and ACCA simultaneously. They enjoy an all-round educational experience that includes projects, assignments and activities that promote the development of soft skills much required by employers. The vibrant student life on campus provides opportunities to participate in student societies, clubs and recreational and sports activities to ensure the accountants produced by TAR College are not merely number-crunching experts, but well-rounded individuals ready to be tapped by employers locally and globally.

Sujeyn Shanmugam, a graduate in Advanced Diploma in Commerce (Financial Accounting) cum ACCA, now attached with General Electric in Singapore confirmed this when he stressed, “The advantage of studying in TAR College is that the College provided a conducive campus environment and I was able to participate in co-curricular activities which sharpened my leadership skills. These skills have proven to be a competitive advantage for me in my career.”
