Hands-on Opportunities Abound at TAR College

To make sure that students are highly adaptable in their future workplaces, Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) has always made sure that ample opportunities are available on its campuses for students to put into practice what they have learnt in the classroom. For the College’s Mass Communication students, this has meant organising events every semester as they enthusiastically hone their practical skills in event management.

In conjunction with Malaysia’s 50 years of Merdeka, the College’s Advanced Diploma in Public Relations students had organised a “Movieng Ahead” film industry tribute and exhibition, which showcased over 74 years of Malaysian film-fare and cinematic history, while also highlighting the diverse talents of Malaysian film-makers in rendering their visual presentations and aesthetic productions.

“These student-run campaigns provide a platform for students to demonstrate their hands-on capabilities in planning and hosting an event that resembles a real-life scenario, which would definitely enhance their employability in the future,” commented Lee Hwee Chuin, Acting Head of TAR College School of Social Science and Humanities.

Running campaigns is part of the practical coursework in Mass Communication subjects such as Events Management and Public Relations (PR) Campaign Planning & Management. Students were required to seek sponsorship, plan publicity, and manage manpower, finances and audience entertainment.

The experience not only hones the students’ organisational skills but also brings out their creativity, as exemplified by their ingenuity in converting mundane daily utilities such as toilet rolls, envelopes and eggs into colourful roses, photo-frames and trendy decorative items respectively in the “Caring Christmas Campaign” fund-raising event.

Organising fund-raising events for the benefit of humanitarian organisations also instills a sense of social responsibility in the students. In recent events, TAR College students raised RM10,000 for the benefit of Ti-Ratana Orphanage and Good Shepherd Homes, and another RM8,000 went to the Malaysian Association for the Blind.

“These social-responsibility campaigns are catalysts for our youths, our businesses, and Malaysians in general, to come together for a good cause. By successfully organising these events, the students have proven that they are well equipped to be the future flag-bearers of the PR, media and communication industry,” commented PR Event Advisor Lim Siz Siz.

Every intake, school leavers eagerly enrol in the popular Mass Communication courses at TAR College. Its School of Social Science and Humanities also offers a line-up of other courses in Fashion Design, Multimedia Design, Psychology, and Hospitality Management.
