TAR College Has A Winning Formula For A Levels

For nearly 40 years, Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) has been earning rave reviews for being a leading institution of higher learning in Malaysia that offers quality pre-university courses at affordable rates. Through its School of Pre-University Studies, the college offers Cambridge A Level and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) courses which have paved the way for many students to enter prestigious universities in the country and around the world.

This October/November 2007 A Level results released recently once again affirmed the College’s reputation in producing high achievers with the number of students obtaining straight As increasing by more than two-fold as compared to the last batch of May/June A Level students of which there were two winners in the Cambridge Brilliance in Malaysia awards. Liew Kar Choon and Chow Ren Kai came in top in the world for Mathematics and top in Malaysia for General Paper respectively with their outstanding performance in the AS Level (Advanced Subsidiary Level) examinations.

On top of that, TAR College’s A Level students who are top-scorers obtained outstanding results of a 100% of As for Further Mathematics, 97% for Mathematics, 94% for Chemistry, 90% for Biology and 84% for Physics.

At the fore of the A Level top scorers was Felix Tan Sin Wei who scored five straight As. He aspires to be a dentist one day and is applying to study at Hong Kong University. The bright lad had this advice to give to those who intend to pursue the A Levels in the Science stream, “Do the exercises again and again for Mathematics and Physics as practice makes perfect. As for Chemistry and Biology, read again and again until you remember all the facts. How much time is allocated for each subject depends on how well you did in your previous exam.” Simple but yet sound advice.

Another student, Tang Yee Wah who scored four straight As attributed his success to the college academic staff. “I like the lecturers here, they are good. They are very dedicated, responsible, motivating and their effective teaching skills have helped me to understand the lessons easily,” said Yee Wah.

In addition, the College also holds the bi-annual Parent-Lecturer Day which serves as an excellent platform for the college teaching staff to build good rapport with the students’ parents and to work together in helping the students to improve their grades.

The Parent-Lecturer Day always draws a large crowd.

School of Pre-University Studies Acting Head, Ms Looi Li Chin strongly believes in providing students with pastoral care which contributes to a wholesome education. “Students are given extra classes or revision classes nearing the examination and consultation hours meted out to students extend beyond the normal 6-hour allocation. On top of that, students’ performances are monitored and they are appropriately given guidance and counselling.” says Looi.

She went on to say that, “ The lecturers at TAR College have a mentor-mentee system whereby junior lecturers convene with the seniors for the particular subject taught, twice-monthly, to discuss about best teaching methods, which areas to emphasise or focus on and to exchange teaching experiences on classroom management.”

In providing a student-centred learning environment, TAR College offers a comprehensive range of leading-edge teaching and learning facilities, which include well-equipped modern laboratories and workshops, free wireless internet access, sports and recreational facilities, as well as library and the E-library which feature a comprehensive collection of information resources.

TAR College will be having its Open Day from the 9th of March to the 23rd of March from 9am to 5 pm at all its campuses. SPM and O-Level graduates who are interested in the A Level programmes can apply for the May intake.
