Learning English in Real Contexts at TAR College

Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) is focused on equipping students to face the challenges of the fast-paced global information culture. Great emphasis is placed on the importance of mastering English language through extra-curricular activities along with substantial classroom teaching.

The College aims to make the learning of English language a varied and positive experience for students in order to encourage the usage of English among them. This was done through the annual English Language Campaign organized by the Extra-Mural Studies Department (EMSD), which features an array of activities such as Public Speaking Competition, English Language Camp and stage performances.

As one of the highlights of the English Language Campaign, the Public Speaking Competition put to the test the participants’ ability to speak eloquently, confidently and with clarity in front of a crowd.

The impromptu speech that is an integral part of the competition is also a true test of the participants’ grit and wit as a speaker, as they are required to perform under stress and given a limited time to make their presentation.

|

The Debate Competition, on the other hand, encourages students to participate in reasoned argument by applying logical thought to respond effectively to oral challenges and persuade the judges with their rhetoric.

The motivating and challenging Debate Competition helps students keep abreast of the current events and at the same time promote skillful articulation of thoughts and arguments in English language besides encouraging teamwork.

While the Public Speaking and Debate Competition cater to students who are more eloquent in speech, the English Language Campaign also attracts students who are more inclined to communicate through written words to express their thoughts through the Book Review Competition.

To make learning English language more fun for students who are out-going and adventurous, the English Language Camp is a much anticipated annual event that is usually held at the seaside resort of Port Dickson.

The Camp offers a great line-up of exciting activities, ranging from team-building activities to charade and "Win, Lose, or Draw", creative sketches to singing and dancing competitions.

These activities are so designed to enable students to practise and showcase their English language proficiency in a relaxing and creative setting. It also serves as an excellent platform for TAR College students from various campuses and different backgrounds to form new friendships and interact in learning activities.

Another highlight of the TAR College annual English Language Campaign that the students look forward to is the English Festival Night. The event showcases a wide spectrum of youthful and exuberant talent, with opportunities presented to the participants to express their flair and creativity through performances such as dance, music and fashion show, as well as the much applauded moralistic and meaningful dramas.

The above events and programmes offer a unique way of honing the students’ English language and communication skills. They also facilitate the College’s on-going effort to create a community of well-informed students who are able to articulate their views and to challenge one another intellectually.
