TAR College Students Win Innovation Competition

KUALA LUMPUR: Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) students swept aside competitors from other local institutions of higher learning to win the B. Braun Innovation Project Competition 2007 recently.

A four-member team from the School of Technology emerged champions with their novel invention for surgeons – a Fail-safe Surgical Tool and Equipment Placement System.

Their winning effort is a system that aims to reduce the incidences of medical negligence by monitoring surgical equipments or tools and gauzes during an operation or surgery.

The winning team comprised Advanced Diploma in Technology (Electronic Engineering) course students Low Aik Sun and Wong Wee Liang, and another two students Chua Ming Jin and Chew Kia Sheng from the Diploma in Technology (Mechatronics) course.

Low, the team leader, said their invention aims to assist surgeons as there were easily over a hundred different surgical tools in use in any operation at one time.

“With our system, we hope to help surgeons to be more confident about not misplacing anything in the operating room,” he said.

“This is a major project for us. Everything has to be done right as it concerns human life,” said Low, adding, “the system has to be foolproof.”

To ensure functionality and practicality of their design, the students presented their preliminary design and final prototype to surgeons and doctors from the Pantai Cheras Medical Centre and Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC).

UMMC Gastroenterology and Hepatology Head Professor Datuk Dr K. L. Goh were among those who gave valuable feedback on the project.

The competition is part of B. Braun’s effort to work with institutions of higher learning to unearth the talent of young innovators and engineers in coming out with new ideas.

TAR College students actively participate in such competitions to seek real world applications of what they have learnt in the classroom.

Winning students in the competition stand to be invited to join B. Braun’s research and development team after their graduation.

The other two finalists were teams from Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. A second team from TAR College also took part in the competition and won the consolation prize with their invention “A Novel Battery Operated Flossing Tool”.

B. Braun Asia Pacific Business Development manager JeLyn Chee said she was very impressed with the ability of TAR College students as some were only in the first year of their Diploma course.
