Holistic Self-development at TAR College

In today’s competitive global economy, competency in scholarship and also the mastery of various soft-skills are pertinent for one to rise up to the demands of industries and to achieve great success.

Throughout the years, Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) graduates have always been very well sought after by employers from various industries because the College offers a premium package that emphasizes on holistic education. The College is committed to instil in students positive personal values and to provide a conducive environment for character development, with the goal of producing graduates who are not only academically well-groomed, but also people-skilled, resilient, and able to adapt to new challenges.

Through its Student Affairs Department, the College conducts a myriad of sports and extra-curricular activities, as well as various workshops and seminars that provide enriching learning opportunities for students to enhance their soft-skills such as communication, interpersonal, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are increasingly demanded by employers.

The annual Leadership Development Camp is one such activity organized by the Student Affairs Department which helps students in their personal development. This year, the adventure-filled 3-day outdoor camp held at Dusun Eco Resort in Bentong, Pahang, was indeed a valuable learning experience and has brought heaps of fun for 120 student leaders.

In her speech during the launching of the camp, the Principal, Ms Yoong Lai Thye encouraged the participants to make full use of the great opportunity to add-value to themselves. “Leaders are not born; they are trained to be one. Thus, the knowledge and soft skills picked up from participating in such a camp must be applied and put into good use,” exhorted Ms Yoong.

Aptly themed “Breaking the Limits”, the camp featured a continuous stream of physical and mind-challenging activities that helps participants to build their character. The training programmes placed great emphasis on team-building and problem-solving, which enabled the students to understand the meaning of perseverance and team effort.

One of the participants Ong Yin Yin, who is the secretary of TAR College Taekwondo Club, found the camp an enriching learning experience. “I have learnt more about the meaning of tolerance, communication and perseverance. From now on I will take on every obstacle in life with a smile and a brave heart,” said Yin Yin.

For Lim Kah En, another camp participant, the camp has helped him to boost the level of self-belief and also confidence in others. “I have discovered that everyone is capable of something and has hidden talents. I would apply what I have learnt from this camp to achieve my personal ambitions,” said Kah En, who is the vice chairperson of the TAR College Student Sports Committee.
