Creative Courses Fast Gaining Popularity at TAR College

Not interested in numbers-crunching, peering into a microscope at the science laboratory, or learning about the latest programming software? Well, not to worry, the School of Social Science and Humanities of Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) offers courses that will stimulate your creative juices in the areas such as Fashion Design, Multimedia Design, Graphic Design, Advertising, Hospitality Management and Psychology.

The Fashion Design programme opens the door for students to be actively involved in many fashion-creation activities such as fashion shows, joining fashion design competitions, showcasing their own creative collections and also working backstage as dressers for various events.

At the first TAR College Fashion Exhibition 2006 show themed FANTASION, the fashion students paraded their creations on the catwalk and later stood by their exhibition space to answer questions from people in the fashion industry. Their creations also adorned the College’s Freshie Kings and Queens at its annual Orientation Night.

Their experiential learning extends beyond the campus. Last year, the students took part in the celebrated Malaysian Official Designers Association (MODA) Unity show. Another group of students competed in the Annual Levi’s Jeans Competition 2006 and grabbed second placing. In the Piala Seri Endon Fashion Competition 2006, its students even made it into the semifinal round. Participation in these events was a golden opportunity to learn from established Malaysian fashion designers and mingle with very important people in the fashion industry.

In the Hospitality Management programmes, students are prepared to enter the fields of hotel management, tourism and foodservice. TAR College has introduced its diploma programmes in both Hotel Management and Tourism at its Kuala Lumpur Main Campus in response to the vibrant growth in the hospitality and tourism sector in Malaysia.

Students would be pleased to find themselves learning culinary preparations and customer management skills in a fully furnished restaurant, complete with a hip and cozy dining area, inclusive of a bar, and built-in professional kitchen facilities. The College’s facilities allow students to practice front-office operations, guest relations, housekeeping, and hands-on management of a hotel. In addition, students are also taught the usage of the industry standard MICROS FIDELIO property-management software which would make them even more marketable when they graduate.

For students who prefer a career that centres on helping their fellow human beings, the School’s Counselling and Psychology courses would be a natural choice. These courses train students in skills of assessing human thoughts and behaviours, expanding their basic psychological knowledge and enhancing their analytical skills so that they can contribute in areas such as health, education and welfare within many industrial and commercial organizations.

For practical training, students in the Psychology course are sent to institutions such as Ti-Ratana Welfare Centre, Good Shepherd House, All Women’s Action Malaysia, and Women’s Aid Organization to experience the reality of counseling and psychology work.

Acting Head of the School of Social Science and Humanities, Mr Lee Hwee Chuin, said: “Our programmes have very close simulation of the actual working environment in the industry in terms of facilities and training. This makes sure our graduates are properly trained and able to perform in their respective fields.”

TAR College works closely with the experts in the industry to produce graduates who are highly sought-after in the employment market. Industry leaders are also frequently invited to meet with the students on campus.

“We believe in providing a quality education,” Mr Lee added. “With the benefit of the input from the industries, we are able to fine-tune our programmes on a regular basis to reflect their demand.”
