Top Performers Choose TAR College Scholarships

KUALA LUMPUR: Financing higher education may not come easy for many students, but thanks to the wide options of scholarships available at Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College), many high achievers choose to further their studies at the College.

The scholarships certainly make a difference to students like Goh Yen Peng, a Year 2 student studying Advanced Diploma in Science (Chemistry and Biology) at TAR College.

“Coming from a family with six siblings, I am grateful to have a scholarship from the College to help pay for my studies,” Goh said.

Goh and many other scholars at TAR College are beneficiaries of the College’s Merit Scholarship scheme which was established in 1997. Under this scheme, students who scored 9As in their SPM or 4As in their STPM/A Levels get to enjoy a 100% waiver of their tuition fee and registration fee. Those with 8As in SPM or 3As in STPM/A Levels enjoy a 75% waiver of the tuition fee and registration fee. A 50% waiver of the same fees is available to students with 7As in SPM who enrol at any one of TAR College’s five branch campuses in Penang, Perak, Johor, Pahang and Sabah.

These scholarships are tenable for the duration of their course. No additional application is required as the scholarships are automatically awarded to all students who meet the criteria.

“Over the last 10 years, 6,560 top performers have received the scholarship awards and it is a testimony of our good track record,” said TAR College Principal Yoong Lai Thye.

Other than the College’s merit scholarships, TAR College is also a partner of the Star Education Fund and Nanyang Tertiary Education Fund scholarships.

“By being a partner institution in these education funds, the College ensures that more students, especially those who are financially disadvantaged, will receive a scholarship to pursue their tertiary education at TAR College,” Yoong added.

Arunesaraani A/P Arunasalam, a Year 2 student in Advanced Diploma in Technology (Materials and Manufacturing Engineering), described getting her scholarship from TAR College as a turning point in her life.

“I am grateful to the College for providing me with the golden opportunity of obtaining an internationally recognised engineering qualification on a full academic scholarship,” Arunesaraani said.

Another scholar, Suriya bt Abdul Hadi, chose to study STPM at TAR College under a 100% scholarship over a place at many local public and private universities. Like many of the other scholars, their good grades do not mean that they are bookworms.

“I am active in sports and extra-curricular activities,” Suriya said. “Active participation in these activities has helped me develop my social and soft skills.”

Suriya, Arunesaraani and Goh were among the scholars who were featured in a scholarship presentation ceremony at TAR College Kuala Lumpur Main Campus on 30 July 2007.

In his address to the scholars, Dato’ Seri Ong Ka Ting, Chairman of the TAR College Council and Minister of Housing and Local Government, noted with pride that TAR College continues to affirm its commitment to high standards of scholastic excellence by offering varied forms of scholarships.

“I am confident that the scholarship will serve as an incentive that motivates you to keep working hard in achieving your vision for greater achievements and support you in your journey towards excellence,” Dato’ Seri Ong told the scholars.
