Official Opening of OSK Investment Bank – Investment Education Room at TAR College
 

On 26th April 2012 OSK Investment Bank and Tunku Abdul Rahman College (‘TAR College’) officially opened the OSK Investment Bank – Investment Education Room (‘OSK Investment Education Room’) in a ceremony attended by officials from both parties and some students. The establishment of the room was made possible with the win by TAR College students in the 2011 OSK Investment Challenge (‘OSKIC’) Competition. The purpose of the competition was to give students the opportunity to learn more about trading and also to take part in the process.

In last year’s OSKIC, which was held from 4th to 28th October 2011, TAR College students managed to rake in over RM11.5 million in virtual profits.

This helped TAR College to beat over 300 other universities and colleges to claim the top prize of RM50,000 sponsorship.

The ceremony, which was held in Cyber Centre, was officiated by CEO / Executive Director of OSK Investment Bank, Mr U Chen Hock, and TAR College Principal, Dr Tan Chik Heok. Dr Tan in his speech said “With the sponsorship from OSK Investment Bank, TAR College is able to provide the latest learning materials and a conducive environment such as the establishment of OSK Investment Education Room to provide our students the best facilities to enhance the learning experience.”

With the establishment of the OSK Investment Education Room, TAR College continues with its mission of providing quality education that promotes total developments for its students.

Staff and Students of Microelectronics and Physics Division Participated in National Instruments PXI Symposium 2012
 

The Microelectronics and Physics Division from the School of Arts and Science was honoured to be invited to exhibit the final year students’ project in National Instruments PXI Symposium 2012 held in Berjaya Times Square Hotel on 19 April 2012. The graduating students, led by lecturers Associate Prof. Dr Lim Hee Chuan and Mr Ooi Hio Giap, showcased their project on Real time Object Tracking System using LabVIEW vision acquisition and digital image processing algorithm. This was the first time TAR College partnered with National Instruments as one of the exhibitors of the symposium since the signing of MoU in 2011 whereby National Instruments donated RM1.8 million worth of software to TAR College. The Microelectronics and Physics Division actively trains students on the use of National Instruments LabVIEW software and some have shown keen interest to work there.

Memorandum of Co-operation Opens Window of Opportunity in University of East London (UEL)
 

Tunku Abdul Rahman College (‘TAR College’) and University of East London (‘UEL’) signed a Memorandum of Co-operation (‘MOC’) which will enable TAR College students studying mass communications and fashion design programmes to pursue relevant undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in UEL.

Under this new collaboration, Diploma and Advanced Diploma students can choose to pursue their final year BA and Masters degrees in relevant specialisations in UEL.

The MOC was signed by TAR College Principal Dr Tan Chik Heok and Mr. John Shaw, UEL Pro-Vice Chancellor (International) on 19 April 2012.

Earlier in January 2012, TAR College signed another MOC with UEL to allow students from School of Business Studies to pursue relevant BA and Masters degree programmes in UEL.

This is a milestone event where the college has yet again provided another avenue for students to experience a wholesome and holistic education.

TAR College Student To Represent Malaysia At Cambridge English Speaking Competition 2012
 

Tunku Abdul Rahman College (‘TAR College’) student, Bong Yang, won the Malaysian national final of the Cambridge English Speaking Competition co-hosted by TAR College on 12 April and will represent Malaysia at the Asia Region International Final in Cambridge, UK, on 5 July 2012.

Apart from winning a trip to Cambridge to compete with worldwide winners representing their countries, Bong and all contestants will vie for a scholarship to study an MBA at the top-notch London School of Business and Finance or a Graduate Certificate in International Business with the University of Tasmania in Australia.

Another two TAR College students, Kuan Yoke Kay and alumnus Yuvanraj Shanmuganathan, also garnered first and second runner-up prizes respectively at the national level.

In total, there were four students from TAR College comprising Bong, Kuan, Yuvanraj and another student, as well as three UiTM students who were the Malaysian finalists in the competition.

They were judged on their presentation promoting Malaysia as a tourist destination in Asia, an impromptu speech, and a question-and-answer session with the judges.

TAR College Dominates Top Two Spots In Cisco NetRiders Malaysia 2012
 

Four students from the Computer Science Division of the School of Arts and Science took home the Champion and 1st Runner-up spots in the 2012 Cisco Networking Academy National NetRiders Competition.

The champion team was headed by Lim Ming Chun and Chan Zhan Hua, who are Advanced Diploma in Science (Information Systems Engineering) students.

Meanwhile Kek Tai Long and Chew Khur Zhong in the 1st runner-up team are students in Advanced Diploma in Science (Internet Technology) and Advanced Diploma in Science (Information Systems Engineering) respectively.

They were not the only ones in the spotlight. Ms Chok Len Mooi, a Senior Lecturer who took part in the Instructor NetExcellence also came out champion in the category.

Since 2008, TAR College has been winning Top 2 positions of Cisco NetRiders competition.

Such glowing achievements reflect the efficacy of TAR College’s holistic education.

STPM High Achievers Given Recognition
 

22 STPM 2011 High Achievers from The School of Pre-University Studies (‘SPUS’) in Tunku Abdul Rahman College (‘TAR College’) were presented with certificates and awards in a ceremony on the 4th April 2012.

The ceremony, held in the Auditorium of Bangunan Tun Tan Siew Sin, was to give recognition to STPM students who scored high ‘CGPA’s in the examination. It was a proud moment for students, lecturers and also parents who were present to witness the event.

TAR College Principal, Dr Tan Chik Heok, gave his congratulatory message and said “Excellent results are the key for entry into excellent universities. Our Pre-U graduates have gained admission into world-renowned universities all over the world.”

After his speech, a slide show was presented and it gave the audience a glimpse of student life in SPUS with photographs of the school surroundings.

And then the certificates and awards were presented to the students.

For the STPM high scorers, the best overall performance in the Arts stream went to Ms Goh Jen Nie who scored a CGPA of 4.00 with her 4 A’s and 1 B-

Meanwhile for Science stream, Ms Yeo Yin Torng had the highest CGPA of 3.92 with 3 A’s and 1 A-. Other high scorers include Ms Ling Hui Yee (from Science stream) and Mr Mohammed Izmir B  Mohd Zamhuri (Arts) who each attained a 3.75 CGPA.

Ms Goh said “Constant revision, a suitable environment and the right study pattern was how I prepared for the examination. We have good facilities in the school, a well-laid out time table and professional lecturers that helped us in our studies”.

Ms Goh hopes to get into Universiti Malaya or National University of Singapore to study law.

Whereas for Ms Yeo, studying smart and having lecturers who are easy to talk to, gave her the advantage.

Mohammed Izmir, who didn’t seem fazed by his accomplishment, revealed that time management and constant exercises are important for any examination preparation. Another student, Abdul Rahman B Abdullah who attained 3A-‘s and 1 B+ said “The teachers sacrifice a lot to teach the students. They are very dedicated”.
 

The students also gathered for a photograph and were beaming at their hard but well-earned achievement.

PAP External Advisers & IEAP Industry Advisers Visited TAR College
 

The School of Arts and Science (‘SAS’) held the Programme Advisory Panel (‘PAP’) & Industry Expert Advisory Panel (‘IEAP’) meetings with its External and Industry Advisers on 3rd and 4th April 2012 at the TAR College Main Campus. The meetings were for all programmes offered at the school.  As the name suggests, the PAP provides expert advice on the relevancy of the curriculum contents of a programme to the requirement of the current and future needs of the industry, while the IEAP provides input on the current and future needs of the industry.  The meetings were chaired by Dr. Ng Swee Chin, Head of SAS, with external academia and industry experts as well as Heads of Divisions, Programme Supervisors and lecturers of the respective programmes as panel members.

The meetings were productive as the panel members and advisers exchanged positive and constructive feedback on the curriculum, academic programme, learning outcomes, syllabuses, facilities, pedagogy, academic and industry trends.
