TARC's ProDEx Exhibition 2011
 

The College hall of the Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College), KL Main Campus was filled with the buzzing sights and sound promising futuristic innovations exhibited in the 2011 Project Design Exhibition (ProDEx). Organised by the School of Technology (SOT), the event showcased the final year projects of the SOT Advanced Diploma students.

This year, the student projects revolved around four main categories, which are "Prototype & Model", "Computer Simulation/Programming", "Social Science Research" and "Management/Engineering/ Experimental Research".

The Best Projects are as follow:-

TARC wins Nike We Run KL 10K
 

TARC had clinched the Top College / University Challenge with a cash prize of RM 10,000 and vouchers worth RM10,000. In line with the competition objective of encouraging young runner to participate in Nike We Run KL, TAR College took the initiative by sending students to take part in the race. Mr Tan Seng Seng, Deputy Director of Student Affairs Department said that more than 1000 students registered for the race.

The Nike We Run KL 10K is part of the Nike We Run City 10K races, where a total of 170,000 runners from 15 cities such as Seoul (South Korea), Monterrey (Mexico) and Santiago (Chile) were part of a unique experience which combines running with music. The run this year in Malaysia also attracted a high number of youths with 61 percent of the runners who competed today comprising of individuals under the age of 25.

TAR College KungFu Recreational Club Won the Overall Champion in Intervarsity Wushu Championship 2011
 

On 25-26 November 2011, six members of TAR College KungFu Recreational Club won the Intervarsity Wushu Championship 2011 and clinched 3 Gold Medal, 5 Silver Medal, 1 Bronze Medal, 1 Spirit Award and won the Overall Championship, beating 8 other local Universities.

TAR College Wheelchair Rugby Workshop and Competition
 

Students from Advanced Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science Year 2 cum BS Degree from School of Arts and Science (SAS) organised a Wheelchair Rugby workshop and competition at the Sports Complex, KL Main Campus.

The main objectives were to introduce to organizers and participants about an unfamiliar sport and also to raise awareness about wheelchair mobility. Besides, students also learned to communicate with disabled individuals and understand their disabilities.

The workshop included a theoretical session taught by an athlete and an official from the Persatuan Sukan dan Rekreasi OKU Negara (PESRON) and a practical workshop for the students.

TAR College School of Pre-University Students Excel
 

TAR College under the School of Pre-University Studies (SPUS) continues to produce outstanding Cambridge International AS Level graduates in its effort to nurture the young and bright minds of tomorrow. Six SPUS students have been awarded with Outstanding Cambridge Learners Award 2011 for being Top in Malaysia (June 2011 examination). The award presentation ceremony took place on 24 November 2011 at Hotel Armada, Petaling Jaya.

The Guest of Honour, Deputy Minister of Education, Datuk Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong presented the Top Achievers certificates to all outstanding students from TAR College. Kerryne Chia Phei Fung came out second in Malaysia for Best Across Five Cambridge International AS level. Kerryne along with five other SPUS students garnered Top in Malaysia awards. They are, Lim Zhi En, Top in Malaysia for Computing, Jeremy Lim Jiang Shen, Top in Malaysia for General Paper, Chye Siew Yin, Aaron Kong Jit Meng and Ik Chien Chien came out Top in Malaysia for Mathematics.

MoU Signing between TAR College (TARC) and Leonard Personality Incorporated Sdn Bhd (LPI)
 

Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) has signed an MoU on 23 November 2011 with Leonard Personality Incorporated Sdn Bhd (LPI) at Main Campus, Kuala Lumpur. The MoU was signed by Dr Tan Chik Heok, TAR College Principal and LPI President Professor Dr Leonard Yong.

Under the MoU, TAR College will work together with LPI to strengthen and promote various soft skills courses. The MoU allows both parties to embark on joint projects involving international collaborative research, share expertise and joint development of research of leadership psychology and personality profiling.

TAR College Choir Society won the Silver B Award in 21st Century International Arts Festival
 

TAR College Choir Society won the Silver B Award in the Category D: Chamber Choir at the Choir Competition held in conjunction with the 21st Century International Arts Festival from 21st- 25th Nov 2011 at Genting International Conventional Centre.

The choir performed three pieces entitled, "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head", "Scoo Be Doo Song" and “Lion Sleeps Tonight". The Choir captivated the judges with their lively musical performances.

5th Convocation Ceremony at the KL Main Campus
 

More than 600 diploma graduates received their scrolls from YB Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai in the morning session of the 5th Convocation Ceremony at the College Hall of the KL Main Campus.

YB Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai, the Minister of Health who officiated the Convocation Ceremony at the KL Main Campus this morning, said in his speech that TARC emphasis on holistic education, its many academia-industry partnerships and hands-on practical learning and training have helped to prepare its graduates for employment. He also commended that “TARC continuous receptivity and strong support to the Government’s call for skilled labour has brought education to a new height and endorses its legacy of producing quality graduates.”

This Convocation is the first of the five sessions to be held at the KL Main Campus. The earlier convocation ceremonies have been held at the TARC branch campuses in Sabah, Perak, Penang and Johor.

A total of 10,026 TARC students graduated this year at certificate, diploma and advanced diploma levels in various disciplines ranging from accountancy, business, hospitality management, mass communication & social science, creative arts, ICT & science and engineering.

Career Talk by TARC alumnus Mr. Chia Cher Hock
 

More than 100 students from the School of Business Studies (SBS) had the golden opportunity to hear first hand on career guidance from a very successful SBS alumnus, Mr. Chia Cher Hock. He is presently the Vice President of Finance, Consumer Small Medium Business in Dell, an American multinational information technology corporation.

In his one hour talk, he shared his career experiences with the students and elaborated on Dell’s two-year Finance Development programme (FDP) that gives entry level undergraduates an opportunity to launch their finance careers. There was also an interactive question and answer session and students were keen to know about the accelerated career paths in Dell Finance, its Global audit and across the Global Finance organisation.

Dell personnel also conducted, at a separate session, on – the - spot interviews for selected students for possible internships and employment.

TAR College wins the Best University/ College category of the 2011 OSK Investment Challenge
 

TAR College students led by the School of Business Studies (SBS) put up a superb performance to clinch the award of Best University/ College category of the 2011 OSK Investment Challenge (OSKIC) with the prize of RM50,000 library sponsorship. The Best University/College category was based on the combined portfolios of the top 100 participants in the overall competition from the participating campuses nation wide.

Over 30,000 participants from Malaysian colleges and universities participated in the OSKIC 2011.

IBM Smart Cloud Camp at TAR College (TARC)
 

Following the success of the recent IBM Smart Cloud Camp Roadshow, TARC’s School of Arts and Science (SAS) hosted the IBM Smart Cloud Camp Training on 12 November 2011 at DK ABF, main campus, KL.

More than 100 participants were all ears to the speaker from IBM, Ms Lee Foong Yen (ISV & Developer Relations) who talked on the foundation, architecture and benefits of Cloud Computing in preparation for the IBM Cloud Computing Professional Certification for the participants.

TAR College – Employers Forum 2011 on ‘Green Technology towards Sustainable Development’
 

TAR College’s 7th Employers’ Forum 2011 was held at the main campus, KL with the theme ‘Green Technology towards Sustainable Development’. It was an exemplary initiative taken to educate the students and public on the importance of Green Technology. More than 250 students, staff, guests, alumni and representatives from various professional and statutory bodies such as Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC) and the Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (REHDA) attended the insightful forum.

The speakers for the forum are Ar Von Kok Leong, President of the Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC) who spoke on the ways and means to promote sustainability as in his topic “Think Sustainability” while Mr. Sam Tan, the Council member of REHDA covered the topic on “Green Developments.”

Pang Jia Wei’s 1Malaysia Animation Wins International PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival and UNESCO Awards
 

Pang Jia Wei’s 1Malaysia video, titled “GIFT”, beat 145 entries from 54 countries to win the PLURAL+ International Jury, UNESCO IGUALADA and Gulen Institute awards, presented at the Paley Center for Media, in New York City, the US, on 10 November 2011

Pang, a second-year Diploma in Multimedia Design student at Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC), flew to New York to receive his awards from the PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival on Migration, Diversity and Social Inclusion, a joint project organized by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNOAC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Pang’s animation-based video, which ends with the slogan “We are different. But the differences colour the world. It is a Gift”, captured UNAOC, the IOM, and PLURAL+ international jury’s call for young people the world over to produce videos proposing their creative solutions to develop peaceful and multicultural societies, and addressing migration, diversity and social inclusion.

TARC students represented Malaysia at the Asia Pacific Region-National Inter-Varsity Student Design and Modeling Competition (Solidworks) 2011
 

Lam Joe Yan and Lim Ji Sern, Advanced Diploma students from School of Technology (SOT) represented Malaysia at the Asia Pacific Region-National Inter-Varsity Student Design and Modelling Competition (Solidworks) 2011 held in Singapore.

In the 2011 Solidworks Regional Skills Competition held on 3rd November 2011 organised by IME Trading Sdn Bhd, Joe Yan and Ji Sern won the Champion and first runner-up title respectively.

TARC-KPMG BEST Soft Skills Development Programme (TKBSSDP)
 

Ten teams of students participants; all for the School of Business Studies (SBS) battled out for the Championship title in the presentation competition on their learning experiences from the Boot camp – (Intermediate level) at the final of the TARC-KPMG BEST Soft Skills Development Programme (TKBSSDP). The objective of TKBSSDP is for the students to learn and understand the essentials of soft skills that included personal mission statement, teamwork, time management, goal setting and more.

The winning team; “Mix Tape” which comprised of Benedick Tan Cherng Tswen, Tan Choon Yiap, Chew Pei Qi, Tan Hooi Nee, Lee Jia Jie, Ngau Kah Mun, Gan Hui Ping, Cheong Kok Wei and Lee Wei Qiong stole the judges’ hearts with their impressive teamwork, eloquence and an exciting video presentation about their involvement in the TKBSSDP which included games like “Tower Building” and “Trust your partner”. The other teams were Synergy, Zenith, Unanimous, Optimistic, Ace, Achievers, High Dream, Evolution and Dynamic Element.

The event, held at DK ABF KL Main Campus was attended by over 200 persons including officials from both KPMG and TARC, lecturers and students.  TKBSSDP, the first of its kind for accountancy students has garnered the support of ACCA and its representative, Dr Ng Boon Beng, Finance Director, Oracle Corporation Malaysia and member of ACCA Malaysia Advisory Committee (MAC) was one of the judges in the competition.

TAR College Carer Fair - Bridging employers with students and graduates
 

TAR College (TARC) two-day Career Fair, held on 1st -2nd Nov 2011 at the Main Campus in Setapak, KL is an ongoing initiative to bridge prospective employers with TARC students and graduates.

More than 30 employers comprising key industry players such as Silver lake Sprints Sdn Bhd, Dell Global Business, Henkel (M) Sdn Bhd and Seednet Technologies Sdn Bhd, Citibank, OCBC participated in the Fair.

In acknowledging that TARC graduates are employers’ first choice, Samantha Yeo from OCBC Bank added that our graduates are not only hardworking but IT savvy and trainable. Ms Aliza Wong from Henkel (M) Sdn Bhd commended that the TARC Career Fair is an excellent platform for employers to connect with students and graduates.
