The School of Arts and Science (SAS) has put out the welcome mat for three external examiners – Dr Wallance Ewart, Dr Keith Adams and Professor Dr Daniel Boye in the month of June 2008.

Dr Ewart is an Academic Advisor of the Graduate Business School at Griffith College Dublin in Ireland who specializes in the areas of library, education training, communication and information technology. He is also an award recipient for the Japanese Ambassador’s Commendation as well as the Order of the British Empire (OBE) presented by Queen Elizabeth.

Dr Adams, on the other hand, has vast experience in industry, research and pedagogy of Chemistry and Biology. He has been working closely with the Chemistry and Biology Division of TAR College for the last 20 years in reviewing and moderating the chemistry questions.

Also present was Prof Dr Daniel who is the external examiner for Microelectronics and Physics Division of TAR College. Prof Dr Daniel is an experimental physicist who has completed his BS, Physics and Mathematics and PhD (Physics) from the University of Georgia. He receives his professorship from Davidson College.

The three external examiners were very much impressed with the improvement and efforts shown by TAR College in enhancing the unit file audits, annual review of syllabus as well as other modifications done on the syllabus. The external examiners also commented that the changes have made the syllabus offered by TAR College reach an industry-oriented standard.

SAS also grasped the opportunity to invite the three external examiners to provide talks to students and lecturers during their visit. Dr Ewart presented a talk entitled “Globalization Learning in Information Technology” whereby he shared information on how the world evolved from the agricultural era to the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) era.

On top of the talk presented by Dr Ewart, TAR College lecturers benefited from the talk presented by Dr Adams which addressed the topic of Computer Aided Assessment (CAA). The lecturers found Dr Adams’ talk very informative when he explained on the importance of using e-learning technology to learn and teach in today’s education sector.

Dr Adams shared his experience on using CAA to identify areas within the course where students often encounter difficulties. “Overall, the talk was extremely useful in helping the lecturers in their teaching processes,” explained Dr Loke Chui Fung, Head of Chemistry and Biology Division.

More informative guidance was shared by Prof Dr Daniel who zeroed in on teaching conceptual physics in his talk. He shared his insight on teaching physics concepts without the use of mathematics as a delivery tool.

The College conveys its heartfelt gratitude to the external examiners for visiting the College.
