TAR College Students Advocate Healthy Lifestyle

TAR College organised a two-day “Healthy Lifestyle Healthy Malaysians” Awareness Campaign from 20-21 August 2007 to raise awareness on health issues amongst its students and the public.

The event was a joint effort by the Diploma in Mass Communication (Public Relations) Year Two students from the School of Social Science & Humanities, the Mass Communication Society and also the School of Arts & Science Alumni Society.

The campaign was designed to provide useful information on basic health issues, general misconceptions on health and also preventive measures against diseases. The students set up 10 booths with each booth focusing on different health issues.

The issues were varied covering diabetic risks, dangers of cancer, obesity, infertility, kidney diseases, skin health, eye care, HIV/AIDS, heart diseases and also the relationship between blood type and food nutrition.

The  health  campaign  was  also  open  to the  public  with guest   speakers  invited   to  give  talks  on  health  related

issues. To spice up the event, many attractive games and activities such as lucky draws, health quizzes, and food demonstrations were arranged.

TAR College Principal Ms Yoong Lai Thye, who launched the campaign, congratulated the students for successfully organising the event.

“I hope that all of you will benefit from organizing this campaign and the experience gained will serve as an advantage to you when you enter the workforce after graduation,” she said.

The worthy event attracted the support and sponsorship of many renowned organisations such as MAKNA, National Kidney Foundation, AIDS Council, Herbal Life, Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre, Excel, Johnson & Johnson, Malaysian Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) Association, along with other various individuals.

“It is a very well-organised event. I am impressed,” said Chee Siew Lian, Honorary Secretary of Malaysian SLE Association. “The students even had specially-made T-shirts to promote the health issue under their charge!”
