Financing higher education may not come easy for many students. This is especially true for Goh Yen Peng, who comes from a large family. "Coming from a family with six siblings, I am grateful to have a scholarship from TAR College to help pay for my studies," said Yen Peng, who is a Year 2 student studying Advanced Diploma in Science (Chemistry and Biology).
For Arunesaraani A/P Arunasalam, a Year 2 student in Advanced Diploma in Technology (Materials and Manufacturing Engineering), getting her scholarship was a turning point in her life. "I am grateful to the College for providing me with the golden opportunity of obtaining an internationally recognised engineering qualification on a full academic scholarship," Arunesaraani said. Yen Peng, Arunesaraani and many others are beneficiaries of TAR College's Merit Scholarship scheme which was established in 1997. Under this scheme, students who scored 9As in their SPM or 4As in their STPM/A Levels get to enjoy a 100% waiver of their tuition fee and registration fee. Those with 8As in SPM or 3As in STPM/A Levels enjoy a 75% waiver of the tuition fee and registration fee. A 50% waiver of the same fees is available to students with 7As in SPM who enrol at any one of TAR College's five branch campuses in Penang, Perak, Johor, Pahang and Sabah.
These scholarships are tenable for the duration of their course. No application is required as the scholarships are automatically awarded to all students who meet the criteria. "Over the last 10 years, 6,560 top performers have received the scholarship awards and it is a testimony of our good track record," said Principal Ms Yoong Lai Thye. |

Other than the College's merit scholarships, TAR College is also a partner of the Star Education Fund and Nanyang Tertiary Education Fund scholarships. "By being a partner institution in these education funds, the College ensures that more students, especially those who are financially disadvantaged, will receive a scholarship to pursue their tertiary education at TAR College," Yoong added.
The scholars were featured in a scholarship presentation ceremony at TAR College Kuala Lumpur Main Campus on 30 July 2007. In his address to the scholars, Dato' Seri Ong Ka Ting, Chairman of the TAR College Council and Minister of Housing and Local Government, noted with pride that the College continues to affirm its commitment to high standards of scholastic excellence by offering varied forms of scholarships.
"I am confident that the scholarship will serve as an incentive that motivates you to keep working hard in achieving your vision for greater achievements and support you in your journey towards excellence," Dato' Seri Ong told the scholars. Tan Sri Dato' Lau Yin Pin, TAR College Council Member, graced the occasion on behalf of Dato' Seri Ong. The ceremony was also attended by Mr Richard Foo, Manager of The Star Education Fund, and Ms Wong Ngook Ching, Senior Editor of the Education Section at Nanyang Siang Pau.
