(National Players' Visit x Feeling of Euphoria)4 = A Smashing Time
|
It is not everyday that the staff and students of the College get to meet their badminton idols face to face. Thanks to the School of Arts and Science Alumni Society led by the efficacious Chairman Mr Tai Sing Nge, the visit was made possible on 23 June when the first Badminton Coaching Clinic was held at the College's Sports Complex.
Feelings of exhilaration filled the air when the nation's badminton elites, comprising of national singles player Mr Wong Choong Hann, former national doubles player Mr Chew Choon Eng, and his two assistants Mr Tan Zhao Rong and Mr Chin Chuan Jue arrived at the Sports Complex together with the Principal Ms Yoong Lai Thye and other senior College officials. |

No sweat … Ms Yoong returning a serve from our national player, Mr Wong Choong Hann. |

| After a round of speeches given by Ms Yoong, Mr Tai and Mr Wong, the badminton coaching session was launched with our Principal and Mr Wong being invited to join the participants in the court in playing the opening serves. Then, the four-hour long badminton coaching session began with a briefing on the evolving history of the game. The participants were all ears when the national players shared their tips and tricks in mastering distinctive techniques such as japing, defending, drop shot and smashing, just to name a few. The names might sound like basic skills to most of us, but in order to win a match, it is more than just knowing how to play. The secret is every player must be well versed in behavioral psychology, as it involved knowing your opponent's strengths and weaknesses and devise his or her own styles of play based on the knowledge obtained. |

| The session ended with a few friendly matches involving our very best players from the College team. When met with Mr Foo Tzi Jang, the College badminton coach, he was all praise for the organiser as the coaching session had certainly benefited many of the would-be sports enthusiasts in badminton. "It is my aspiration to see that one day, a national player will emerge from TAR College and bring glory to Malaysia," expressed Foo with twinkles in his eye. |
