The recent Public Speaking Competition organised by HSBC-The Star-ESUM (English Speaking Union of Malaysia) saw six of our TARC students participating in this event. The theme for this year’s competition was “Regeneration and Renewal”.
The students, namely Thavarupani a/p Subramaniam (DMS1) and John James Frois (DAV1) from SSH; Poon Shu Xian Amanda (DMK1) from SBS; Yuvanraj a/l Shanmuganathan (DME2) from SOT; Jebbie Kaur Mecathum (A-Levels) and Phraveen Arikiah (A-Levels) from SPUS, attended the workshops conducted at Kolej Damansara Utama and Kolej Kasturi. All these students showcased their talents in the Preliminary Rounds which were held in Kolej Damansara Utama in Petaling Jaya on 14 March 2009. From a total of 120 students who participated in the Preliminary Rounds, only 18 semifinalists were selected to represent the Kuala Lumpur Zone.

Two of our students made it to the Semi-final Round, and they were Thavarupani a/p Subramaniam and Phraveen Arikiah with their speeches entitled “White Papers” and “Connecting with Nature” respectively. The competition was very stiff with many of the semi-finalists showing remarkable talent and wit in their interpretation of the theme. Thavarupani impressed the judges and the audience with her story of Matthew who had limited time with his white papers and urged all those who were present to use their white papers as wisely as possible. She made it to the National Finals and represented TAR College at the Finals which was held on the 28 March 2009 at Berjaya Times Square.
“This year I learnt a lot from the rest of the participants and was also confident that I was able to speak in front of distinguished judges and guests. Although I did not get to go to England, just the experience of participating in this event was a great learning curve for me. I encourage all students to participate in these kinds of events as much as possible to grow and develop into a more holistic person and to develop self-confidence,” said Thavarupani about the whole experience.

| We are indeed proud that Thavarupani has blazed yet another trail at this widely-acclaimed public speaking competition and it is hoped that in the years to come, many more would follow suit. |
