SBS Students Emerge 1st Runners-up at UM-Citibank Intervarsity
Case Study Challenge 2007
|
Four budding
business talents from TAR College emerged as the First Runner-up at
the final of the Universiti Malaya–Citibank Intervarsity Case
Study Challenge 2007.
The team is comprised of Khong Heng Jun, Yee Su Chin, Chiew Yi Ling
and Chan Eng Loo from the School of Business Studies (SBS) and was
mentored by the School’s Senior Lecturer Mr Chin Yok Fong. Under
the fictional name of Fusion Corp, the team made it as one of the
four finalists that pitched their ideas to a panel of judges based
on a given case study.
They were required to present their strategies pertaining to various
strategic issues such as human resource, marketing, as well as business
planning and development. Despite the pressure of competing with teams
from other universities, the team managed to deliver an outstanding
performance and impressed the judges with their comprehensive analysis
and constructive recommendations. |

Fusion Corp. was one of the two TAR College teams that participated
in the competition this year. The team took a close second place
behind the champions from International Islamic University Malaysia. |
| “All
the members of the Fusion Corp. team have put up an excellent performance.
They made it into the final round and took up the First Runner-up
position with merely a few marks away from the champion,”
said the team’s mentor Mr Chin Yok Fong. He further remarked
that the case study challenge was on human resource issues which have
no direct relation to the core disciplines of the members of the team
who are from Accounting, Business Administration and Marketing majors.
Hence being the First Runner-up was a great achievement for them. |
| “Needless
to say, the College is extremely proud of them, in particular of their
versatility, typically reflective of TAR College’s culture of
developing well-rounded students who are able to face the dynamic
challenges of the outside world,” said Chin. |
| Last year, TAR
College dominated the competition by grabbing both the Champion and
First Runner-up spots. |
| “Although
it’s quite disappointing not being able to defend our title,
I truly felt that we learnt a lot from this competition as I have
very little background in marketing and human resource management,”
said Heng Jun who is an Advanced Diploma in Commerce (Financial Accounting)
student. “I have to thank all my team mates for their superb
performance, and most importantly our mentor Mr Chin and the rest
of the staff from SBS who were all out to motivate us and guide us
throughout the competition.” |
| “Case
study is a very interesting subject that focuses on putting into application
what we have learnt. Not only does it help us to think analytically,
it also widens our thinking on various aspects enormously. It’s
a truly relevant subject especially if you’re heading into the
business world,” added Heng Jun. |
| As the First Runner-up,
the team walked away with a cash prize of RM1,500, a trophy, and also
certificates of participation. |
| The annual competition
was organized by the Business Club of University of Malaya (UM) in
collaboration with Citibank Malaysia. |
