Special TAR College Angpow for a Special Girl
TAR College did its bit for the needy when it undertook a collection drive for heart patient Tee Hui Yi. Students from the Student Welfare Committee (SWC) of the School of Pre-University Studies tirelessly knocked on doors of lecture theatres and tutorial classes across the campus to collect donations from staff and fellow students alike. Their fervent effort raked in RM3,192 within 6 hours to give Hui Yi a big angpow for Chinese New Year.

Hui Yi is the second successful mechanical heart recipient in the country who is at the National Heart Institute (IJN) awaiting a heart from a suitable donor. Her medical condition forced the 14-year-old girl to stop schooling three years ago. She is also not able to travel much as she is dependable on a mechanical heart that is powered by a 9kg portable battery which she has to lug along wherever she goes and which can only last for four hours.

Her plight which was widely covered in the local dailies has touched TAR College alumni Mr Spencer Tan to come up with the idea of giving her a surprise Chinese New Year gift. Together with donations from his friends, Tan and the TAR College students visited Hui Yi at IJN on February 16. “We just want to make her smile,” said Chan Oga, one of the students. “We can’t give her a heart, but at least we can give her something to make her happier.

Hui Yi was visibly happy at the unexpected gift from the College as she carefully read beautifully designed cards that the students had prepared for her. For the students, it was well worth all the hard work.

We are really ecstatic, really happy to see her look so well,” said Alethea Tang, chairperson of the SWC. “It feels good to be able to help her.”

Through such activities, TAR College encourages its students to remember and care for those who are less fortunate as education at the College is not just confined to learning academic knowledge alone but also involves inculcating ethical values.

The unity throughout the College really showed,” added Alethea. “Everyone helped out and chipped in to make the collection drive a success.”

Everybody kindly donated to a good cause.
