The inaugural
SBS Mini Career Fair hosted by TAR College on Tuesday, March 20 attracted
huge interest from some of the top names in business to meet directly
with the College’s budding business talents. The event provided
an excellent platform for recruiters and managers from leading international
financial institutions and multinational companies to source for prospective
candidates for internship, full-time, and part-time positions.
Jointly organized by the College’s School of Business Studies
(SBS) and Student Affairs Department (SAD), the Fair was catered specially
for accountancy students and has proven to be a great success. About
400 students, most of them soon-to-graduate, had the chance to meet
with representatives from renowned companies such as KPMG, Ernst &
Young, Deloitte, Pricewaterhouse- Coopers, BDO Binder, Standard Chartered
Bank, United Overseas Bank, OCBC Bank, IBM, Dell, Hewlett-Packard
and Bata.
The overwhelming response from the participating employers during
the Career Fair demonstrates that TAR College graduates are in high
demand by the industry, even among the heavyweights.
“We are looking for candidates that not only possess excellent
academic qualifications but also soft skills such as communication
skills and ability to work in team. So far we have spoken to some
candidates who have shown remarkable potential,” said Ms
Nancy Wong, a Senior Resourcing Executive from KPMG.
Ms Christine Chan, who is the Human Resources Manager at Ernst &
Young, found the Fair especially conducive for recruiting because
it was timely and accounting-focused. “This Mini Career
Fair is excellent because there is a big pool of targeted candidates
and most of them would be ready to be employed very soon,”
said Chan.
The SBS students also benefited through the informative career leads
and exciting networking possibilities that were made available at
the Fair.

career prospects. “I haven’t really decided what I
want to do so this is a good chance for me to find out more about
these companies and check out the various job opportunities,”
said Hui Pei who is currently completing her CIMA qualification.
On the other hand, Lee Wai Yee, a final-year Financial Accounting
student made use of the opportunity to submit her resume to a few
of the participating companies and had a preliminary interview with
KPMG during the Fair. “The Fair serves as a great channel
for future graduates to find employment because it offers direct access
to ample job opportunities,” said Wai Yee who is currently
pursuing the ACCA qualification.
Head of School of Business Studies Ms Kho Sok Kee commented that the
SBS has a very well rounded curriculum that caters very much to industry
needs and graduates are well sought after in the market. She also
added that the academic staff at SBS are committed in their quest
to be more innovative in enhancing the learning experience of the
students.
"The whole team at SBS shares a common goal towards ensuring the
highest academic standards and quality in our provision of business
education," said Kho.
In addition to the Mini Career Fair that is specially organized for
the SBS students, the College annually hosts a large-scale job fair
that caters for all TAR College students and graduates. |
