Fashion Design Students Reap Enriching Experience at the MODA Unity Show Extravaganza
The MODA (Malaysian Official Designers Association) Unity Show 2006, held on 18 March at the Shangri-La Hotel Ballroom, was a night to remember for 11 second year Diploma in Fashion Design students from the School of Social Science and Humanities. Accompanied by their two lecturers, Ms Hariza and Ms Nadeane, they got acquainted with who’s who in the fashion industry and rubbed shoulders with celebrities and models.
It was the first time that TAR College participated in this event which was also attended by ten other local fashion colleges. Two designs were submitted based on inspiration by the Belvedere Vodka bottle and Motorola SLVR mobile phone, sponsors of the event. It took the students about three weeks to complete the garments, beginning from designing, fabrics and materials purchasing, pattern drafting, cutting, sewing and finishing. As it was a semester break, a small group of students decided to initiate the project by using Evon Tan Siau Fen’s creative designs and began working. When the other students returned from their hometowns, everyone collaborated to bring the garments together and toiled at further modifications and finishing touches. “Everybody pitched in with their ideas and contribution. Teamwork was evident from the beginning,” Grace Chung Siang Yi said.

On the night of the event, the students were struck by a wave of excitement and became starry-eyed at the stunning surroundings. The students studied and compared designs from other colleges that adorned the mannequins. “Even though our college is relatively new at fashion design, we are glad that our designs were on par with the other more established fashion colleges. Although we are the pioneer batch of fashion design students in TAR College, we are taught to be more independent and not spoon-fed,” said a determined Kwok Seow Meng.

It was a heady experience for the students as well as lecturers. They hope that more exposure will come their way and that their juniors can participate in future. The MODA Unity Show 2006 has been inspiring and both students and staff involved were grateful for the opportunity given by the College and MODA.
