Welcome Home,
TARCians
|
| The month of February
2006 was an especially meaningful and nostalgic trip down memory lane
for two groups of alumni. With the spirit of Chinese New Year still
lingering in the air, the first group of more than 140 alumni led
by Mr Mark Hew, President of the Federation of TAR College Alumni
Associations were welcomed back to their alma mater on February 11,
2006. |
| Upon arrival,
they quickly filled the Clubhouse with boisterous greetings. Some
of them have not seen each other for more than 10 years as these successful
alumni had spent so much time building their careers and caring for
their family that it was difficult for them to find time to gather
and exchange news. |
The College
took this opportunity to update its alumni with its achievements and
plans for the future. The alumni, on the other hand, were not short
of praise for their alma mater’s success in providing the country
with quality graduates. In fact, they are the living testimonies of
the fine education received at TAR College. The alumni were also taken
for a guided tour around the campus and most of them were in awe of
the College’s development since they graduated. “We
have reached a point in our lives where we hope we can contribute
back to the College. There are times when I just sit back and think
of the good old days in College. It’s amazing how much the College
has grown,” said an alumnus.
College Principal, Ms Yoong encouraged the alumni to visit their alma
mater whenever possible and to bring their children along. "I
hope your children would become the next generation of TAR College
students and benefit from the quality education that we provide. They
can also enjoy the facilities that were not available during your
time," she said. |

and College officials during the campus tour. |

| The alumni were pleasantly
surprised by the visit of the “God of Prosperity” while
touring the College. Little did they know that under the costume and
heavy makeup was Mr John Kay, a fellow alumnus, who took the opportunity
to bless and bring cheer to the alumni and college staff. |

Everyone was overjoyed when the God of Prosperity paid a surprise
visit to bless everyone for the year ahead. |

On the morning of February 18, 2006,
another eventful and joyous reunion was coordinated by Mr Teng Kim
Ming. Mr Teng was so excited to have a homecoming in College that
he brought his own laptop loaded with images taken during College
years to rekindle the fond memories they had while studying in TAR
College. Mr Teng and his classmates were the SBS-ACCA Class of ’92.
Interestingly, it was also one of the classes that our Principal,
Ms Yoong Lai Thye, taught when she was a lecturer then. Ms Yoong was
delighted to meet up with her former students. Some, she lamented,
have changed so much that she could barely recognize them.
A special campus tour was tailored so that they can visit the lecture
halls and walk the pathways that were familiar to them. They huddled
into DK 2 and were surprised by the changes that had taken place.
Gone were the blackboards and benches that are now replaced by computers
and individual seats. Instinctively, they returned to
the usual seats they used to |
| occupy when they
had their lectures. An alumnus was heard telling his son, “Mama
used to sit here and Papa used to sit right at the back.”
How sweet it was to know that the college sweethearts have married
each other and have children of their own. Ms Yoong took the microphone
and to the amusement of her former students said, “Now if
you don’t behave, I’ll send the chalks flying after you.”
They laughed and responded, “No more chalks! It’s
all PowerPoint now!” |
| Both groups of
alumni had “yee sang” before their buffet lunch. “Family”
ties were bonded with this significant toss of “yee sang”
for blessings and good luck. Smiles and laughter filled the air as
chopsticks lifted the ingredients high up for a good mix of colourful
platters. |
| The College strives to encourage
close networking with all its alumni by organizing meaningful alumni
homecomings for ex-students of the College. |

Getting updated on new facilities …. Alumni were impressed with
the new Cisco Lab on their campus tour around the College. |

In stitches …. Ms Yoong shares a light moment with SBS alumni.

|

One big happy family …. Nearly everyone from the SBS-ACCA Class
of '92 returned to meet up with ex-classmates and lecturers.
