Fundraising at TAR College for Sichuan Quake Victims

Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) College students once again showed their compassionate side when they undertook a college-wide fundraising effort recently to raise funds for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake in China.

The initiative was carried out by students of TAR College Main Campus in Kuala Lumpur and five branch campuses in Penang, Perak, Johor, Pahang and Sabah as soon as they started their new academic year in late May. The students also took the extra initiative to set up informational booths exhibiting photos and news of the disaster in order to update students and staff of the latest development on the situation in Sichuan.

The concerted effort enabled the students to collect a total of RM25,880.13 for the victims. The money raised was presented to the Sin Chew Foundation, through which it would be channeled to the Sichuan victims.

Such fundraising activities are frequently organised at TAR College and the College welcomes such initiatives from its students as involvement by students to solicit contributions from among their peers towards a worthy cause will help to instill a caring spirit among them for the less fortunate.

“It’s our objective to serve,” said Lee Kong Jiun, Chairman of the First Aid Unit (FAU) in TAR College Kuala Lumpur Main Campus, when asked about why his society undertook the collection effort. He added that the people they had approached were very receptive to the fundraising. “All the staff and students generously donated to help the victims in Sichuan,” Lee said.

Gan Jia Yue, Assistant Publicity and Publication Manager of the FAU said although Malaysians live miles away from China, people here are still very concerned about what is happening to the people in China.

“Many of the people whom we approached actually thanked us for organising the fundraising effort because they wanted to donate but didn’t know where to go. By organising the fundraising on the campus, we have made it convenient for everyone to do their part for the less fortunate,” Gan said. “Everyone is very appreciative of us working hard to help the people in Sichuan.”
