The Adjustment to College Life (ATCL) programme held during the Orientation Week in May this year has generated overwhelming response from the new students and proved to be of great help in preparing them for campus life.
Conducted by the students for the students, the programme saw the participation of a total of 196 freshmen. The seniors played the role of facilitators to help their fellow students to adapt to their new life in college.
The programme kicked-off with a welcoming session that got the participants to mingle around and greet their new friends. It seemed that there was no better way to break the ice between the freshies than getting them to race with their legs tied together and join hands in solving puzzles and charades.
One of the highlights of the programme was the a sharing session by the seniors on their experiences in adjusting to college life, such as adapting to the teaching |

styles, living independently, tolerating their roommates or housemates and using English in class.
The freshies were also divided into groups for the interactive activities that aimed to help them get to know each other better. Each group of the freshies was given a case scenario where they were asked to brainstorm ideas and present solutions to some of the problems and challenges that they face as a freshman. Besides that, the seniors also took the opportunity to provide the new students with some helpful tips on the dos and don’ts in college. |

A survey established the fact that 80% of the freshies found that the programme enhanced their confidence to face the challenges in college and to adapt to a new chapter in their lives.
In preparation for the programme, over 30 students were trained on how to facilitate group activities and a sharing session. The commitment of the seniors helped make this year’s programme a success. In fact, it was also a rewarding experience for committee members as it has helped them to hone their organizational and communication skills.
