Fighting the Flame
While we may not drink the hemlock as Socrates did, we may unwittingly lock ourselves in as we lock the burglars out. This is especially true when the aesthetically designed window grilles of our homes have become the worst barrier to a quick escape from flaming furniture.

This grim fact about window grilles was one of the many shocking wake-up calls that Mr Thomas Chow Ching Soon, a Fire Safety Instructor, sent to the participants during a talk on Fire Safety and Prevention, organized by the Centre for Continuing Professional Education (CPE) on 16 April 2008.

The talk, attended by more than a hundred college staff and senior College officials, covered the stages of fire outbreak, fire precautions, safety tips, and ended with a demonstration on how to use a fire extinguisher.

Participants also picked up tips such as never open doors that were hot to the touch and always crawl through a smoke-filled room to avoid choking, or learn about what the letters “ABC” on a fire extinguisher meant.

As the participants left the talk, armed with the new knowledge on fire safety and prevention, it was hoped that more lives would be saved.
