The Malaysia
Mental Literacy Games 2006 held recently at TAR College, Perak Branch
Campus brought in many participants from all over Malaysia who competed
in four categories of the mental literacy activities. Yip Kooi Keat,
23, a student studying the Diploma in Science (Business Information
Systems) course from Perak Branch Campus emerged champion for the
Creativity category.
He said he had not even thought about winning as he only wanted to
participate in the competition. He added that he would be joining
the contest next year. When asked about how he planned to spend his
cash prize of RM1,000 which he won during the contest, he said he
would give half of the cash prize to his parents and keep the balance
for himself.
Where manual labour and routine activity once ruled, brainpower and
creativity now begin to reign supreme. Participation in such games
increases the mental abilities of TAR College students and also widens
their scope of learning methods.
Mental literacy involves mnemonics, speed-reading, mind-mapping and
creative thinking. The techniques require humans to use 100% of our
mental faculty, if possible, and not just the usual 1% in all our
endeavours. Mental literacy is about learning how to learn and not
just learning what needs to be learned only, and practising what we
learned. |
