A wise man once said: “English Language is a powerful tool. If it is to be used correctly, it can unite the world”. Having practiced this wisdom since the establishment of TAR College, the Extra-Mural Studies Department organizes its annual Promote English Campaign as part of the College’s ongoing efforts in promoting the correct usage and raising the standards of the English Language amongst its students. One of the major highlights of the annual campaign is the Public Speaking Competition.
The competition began with a workshop attended by 140 eager students. Right after the workshop was the qualifying rounds, where a total of 55 hopeful participants came forward to take the challenge. The participants who made it were chosen for the preliminary rounds, semi-finals, and eventually, the finals, which was held on 1st December 2008. The finalists were truly awe-inspiring. |

They wowed the audience with their wit, humour and inspiring speeches based on the theme “Timeless Beauty”. At the end, Phraveen Arikiah from SPUS with his eloquent speech managed to capture the audience’s attention and convince the judges to sway their votes to his favour. The first and second runner-up were Yuvanraj of SOT and Thavarupani of SSH respectively.
A competition of this nature was most appropriate not only in helping students overcome their fears of talking in front of large audiences but also on impressing upon them the importance of mastering the English Language. Additionally, as they become good speakers of English, it is hoped that they will have the competitive edge to meet the demands of the current dynamic nature of our country’s workforce. |
