TAR College –ICT Showcase 2008, officiated by the Acting Vice Principal, Ms Lim See Wah on 17 December 2008 was organized by the School of Arts and Science and Computer Science Society. The main objective was to expose each student (regardless of his or her field of study) on the latest information and communication technologies.
Aptly themed as “Tech the World”, the event showcased the latest areas in game technology, networking, games technology, mobile technology, microprocessors, web services, software developments and other fields in computer science. There were 10 technology booths in the College Hall and each booth was manned by a team of lecturers and students.
Each technical team focused on providing information to students on the immense possibilities of leveraging on the latest technologies. Examples were the networking team who engaged students in learning network concepts through computer games, quizzes, lucky draws, technical talks and even showcasing the TARC Imagine Cup.
Equally interesting were the booths, sponsored by companies which are noted industry leaders in the specific fields. The sponsor companies were Microsoft Malaysia, Cisco Systems, NCL Solutions, IG – Interactive and Omron Electronics. The representatives from these companies also gave informative talks such as “Stay Ahead and Be Relevant” by Cindy Chong, Managing Director for NCL Solutions Sdn Bhd and “Preparing Students for the 21st Century Knowledge Economy” by Ian Su, Senior Academic Technology Advisor from Microsoft (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.
Other special highlights in this event were “Omron@Xpress”; a moving exhibition on wheels that explored RFID technologies, the “X-Box” booth which showed different ways to compete in a Rock band competition. Other interesting booths were “Job Camp” which provided information on technopreneurship and “MCA-ICT Resource” which highlighted on professional certification.
The event was a crowd puller, attracting 3,000 students who made a beeline to the occasion. Lim Woo Tong, First Year Advanced Diploma in Science enthused, “This event provides an excellent opportunity for every student to be aware of an important revolution that has a tremendous impact on the way we live and transact business.”
This event is certainly an excellent initiative to enhance the teaching, learning and sharing environment of our College.
