Educational Trip to Korea

It was nine fruitful days for Ms Woo Mei Teng, Sport and Exercise Science lecturer from the School of Arts and Science, who visited Kyung Hee University and Yong In University in Korea from 16 - 24 November 2007.

The two universities are highly regarded for their research in taekwondo and other sports. “Kyung Hee University is well known for applying sports science knowledge in the studies of martial arts and golf, while Yong In University has a biomechanics professor who is the President of the biomechanics association in Asia,” said Ms Woo.

The trip was fully sponsored by the taekwondo chief instructor of TAR College, Master Tan. The objectives of the visit were to explore the application of sports science in martial arts, get

updates about the latest research findings on taekwondo, and start a preliminary academic relationship with both universities.

Ms Woo received a very warm welcome from Prof Song, Vice Dean of Graduate Studies of Kyung Hee University. Prof Song is leading a research in the longitudinal study on the effect of exercise and martial arts training on bone growth and he shared a lot of information from his experience. Ms Woo also visited some of the sports science laboratories and gymnasiums in both universities that are equipped with world-class facilities for biomechanics and exercise physiology testing as well as for martial arts training.

 

"It was an invaluable trip as I was able to have a closer look at how the Koreans apply their technical knowledge in sports science to help towards enhancing performance in sports and learn about their latest developments in research,” said Ms Woo. “I’ll use what I have learnt to improve the coaching of taekwondo at TAR College. In addition, the knowledge in sports science that I have gained would be useful in my future lectures!
