Angels Among Us

Students and staff of TAR College collected a total of RM162,708.10 for the Yayasan Nanyang Press in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of our nation’s independence.

The fund-raising drive was entitled Step by Step up for Charities – A Series of Mountain Trekking. Charity climbs were organised at eight states namely, Perak, Penang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Pahang and Kelantan.

Yayasan Nanyang Press is a media philanthropic foundation established in February 1999. The college-wide fund-raising campaign was held with the noble mission to assist the foundation in its commitment to help the underprivileged. Part of the proceeds will go towards maintaining four dialysis centres, introducing more empowerment programmes for single mothers and their children, organising more leadership training camps for abandoned and abused children as well as health and cultural programmes with the elderly and other charitable activities. This charity drive was made more meaningful when a portion of the total fund collected would be donated to the TAR College Student Loan Funds.

Individual donors who collected RM5,000 and above and donors from organisations who managed to donate RM10,000 and above will be able to participate in the climax climb in Mount Kinabalu, Sabah. With this incentive, the staff and students around the College shifted into full gear and took up the challenge to raise funds for this meaningful occasion.

The donation drive was a success and with the total sum collected, 16 people, comprising staff and students of the College, followed the rest of the donors from other organisations in conquering Malaysia’s tallest mountain on 30 and 31 October 2007.

When asked about the unforgettable experience, Valerie Tan, a second year student pursuing Diploma in Business Studies (Finance & Investment) had every reason to thank the College. “The experiences that I gained were invaluable. The climb certainly pushed my physical and mental capability to the limits. I strongly encourage everyone to participate in such similar fund-raising activities to help others. My participation has helped me in building my confidence and developing my soft skills such as teamwork and gaining trust, which I believe will be very useful in my future!” she said enthusiastically.
