Open Your Mind with English

For centuries, the English language has been the lingua franca of the world. It is used globally and extensively in relaying news and information, in international businesses, as formal language of communication and diplomacy between countries and as the premier language of science and technology throughout the world. In recognition of the immense importance of the English language, TAR College, through the Extra-Mural Studies Department (EMSD) has been unflinchingly raising the standards of the language and its usage throughout the various campus-wide student activities organised annually. Competitions such as debates and public speaking were held annually to train students on the finer points of critical thinking and oratory skills on a wide range of topics.

Ms Lin Meiyi, the champion of the 2007 Public Speaking competition enthusiastically remarked that taking part in this competition have made her more sensitive to the latest contemporary issues and current affairs when conducting research. “I would also like to thank my friends and lecturers at the School of Arts and Science for their support and guidance, and also to my beloved College for giving me the golden opportunity to improve my English,” she said. Her speech entitled “Of Cornflakes, Trees and Sunlight” reminded all of us that life is precious and we should always appreciate what we have. It managed to capture the judges’ attention and subsequently won the competition.

Forum sessions were also held throughout the campuses as one of the ways to encourage students to speak their mind on the various social issues through the usage of the English language. It served as a platform for the students to sharpen their critical thinking skills and voice out their concerns over the myriad of issues faced by society today. Topics such as “Women are Smarter than Men”, “We Become Victims of Crime As a Result of Our Behaviour” and “Should Prostitution be Legalized?” for example, managed to invoke curiosity and encourage discussion, not only from the panellists but also from both the audiences and the organisers. At the end of the forum, the organisers were all praise for the College students for successfully displaying high levels of maturity.

Other than the above, EMSD also organised Book Review Exhibitions and English Language Camps for the students. The latter was a highly anticipated annual event as participants will be able to learn the language in a fun and stimulating way. All in all, it is without a doubt that English is the most widely used language of the world, and will continue to become more and more important in the future. With this awareness, the College, through the EMSD will continue   to   place   great   emphasis  on   the
