The project is something outside of the comfort zone of the two engineering students. “We just want to prove to others that as engineering students, we can also excel in IT and business competitions,” said Aik Sun, the team leader.

The students are able to tackle the business aspect of the competition thanks to the holistic education at TAR College. The knowledge that they have gained through the business subjects in their engineering courses proved useful in coming out with the business proposal.

“Creativity and innovation may be very important, but in order to commercialise a product or an idea, we have to look into the cost effectiveness of producing the product and conduct research on its market potential,” added Aik Sun.

The Scope International ICT Competition 2007 is a nationwide competition for university students and working ICT Professionals to submit their business proposals on how to utilise ICT to improve business practices and enhance daily life. It serves as a platform for individuals who want to make a difference in inspiring lives both locally or globally.

TAR College took part in the competition under the University Student Category with over 30 other competing teams. The other finalists together with TAR College were teams from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Curtin University of Technology, and Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology.

Two TAR College students walked away with a RM1,000 prize in the ICT Competition 2007 organised by Scope International on 5 December 2007. The students are Low Aik Sun from the Advanced Diploma in Technology (Electronic Engineering) course, and Chew Kia Sheng from the Diploma in Technology (Mechatronics) course.

Both students are part of the team that won the B Braun Innovation Project Competition 2006/2007 (see Berita Kampus June 2007 issue). The inspiration for their latest idea came from an experience while they were on their way to B Braun Medicals, when they were stranded by the highway with a flat tyre. With cars speeding by, the emergency phone a distance away, the noon sun striking down hard on them, and the final presentation to B Braun looming in a few  hours,  the students wished there

could be a quick and easy solution to their predicament at that moment.

Out came a creative and innovative business idea proposal called ROAM lite (Road Online Around Malaysia). This web-based emergency support service can locate the position of a user and display service information related to that person’s location. With just a press on the handphone, the user can get assistance from the nearest mechanic, police station or even hospital. The technologies utilised  are  3G,  GPRS, WAP, XML and JAVA programming.

Frequent travellers would be pleased  to know  that ROAM lite comes  with information on accommodation, dining, weather, traffic  conditions,  tourist attractions and petrol stations. A  simple map will guide  users   to  their   intended   service.     Additional
